While writing the first part of today’s China experience, Peter and I are sitting in the van, on our way back from our hike over the Great Wall.
The smell of instant noodle in the morning
The previous night was aweful for both of us (Peter and I). For some reason we couldn’t sleep! When our alarm went off around 6:40 in the morning, I felt totally wasted. Even a quick shower didn’t wake me up. I tried to eat some noodle and then we hit the cold outside air.

We arrived at the Beijing Backpackers accomodation (a hostel I stayed before) to start our adventure. It’s a three hour drive to the starting point. I did the same trip in 2006 with I Chu during summer and it was beautiful. Unfortunately, the hike is a bit shortened because of renovations on a part of the Wall. Besides that, they built a highway that is visible on the horizon. The Wall is still great though! The first part of the Wall is touristic and renovated. The last part of the hike is old and damaged (in the old state). The views are stunning, although the environment is quite empty. In summer, everything is more green. At some parts, there where remains of snow. Peter and I loved it. We were the fastest of our hiking group. The happy en sweet guide was worried that something may have happened to us. She told us that she arrived at the finishing point out of breath. The three-hour ride back in the same van was fast but uncomfortable because of the little leg room (Chinese sized seats)!
Peter and I where exhausted when we arrived back at the starting point around 17:00 hours. By then, we had only eaten some noodles, snacks and a Snicker. We decided to eat in the restaurant we went to on the day of our arrival, and then go back to the appartment of Hiu Ying and Jeroen.
After we chilled out for a while and checked out the party agenda for the next day, we went to bed.
