Not so Sunday (Tuscany 2012 #2)

Storm at Castiglione Della Pescaia

Our Sunday started with a sunny and warm morning. After breakfast, we started exploring Castiglione Della Pescaia. We walked from a small hill (with nice views) to the harbour with the expensive yachts. We saw some surfers trying to catch the few waves. I didn’t expect any waves, so I didn’t bring my surfboard. There is a surfshop at the main village road. Maybe I rent a board later if the swell keeps coming.

Boring military town Grosseto
My wife and I walked on the beach. Everything looks quite touristic and the apartments next to the beach look a bit depressing. Still, we enjoyed our walk on the beach, in the sun. After our walk, we decided to go to Grosseto for lunch. On our way to Grosseto, we passed a military airport. The environment was not nice at all. We had to get out of this grey, ugly place as fast as possible! Unfortunately, the sky was also grey, like Grosseto.

No Lunch
We still didn’t have lunch. We decided to drive to Montalcino, with fortress from the 14th century. We drove through typical Tuscany landscapes. The views are awesome, even without the sun. We passed by many grapevines and olive trees. Montalcino is one huge tourist attraction. Loud music came out of a pizzeria located in front of the village, and tourists come in big touring cars. I did not like it, but we needed to eat something! We parked our car and searched for some food. It started to rain heavily, with some thunder. The nice restaurants are closed in the afternoon between 15:00 and 19:00. It was already 15:30. Bummer!

Bad Weather Castiglione Della Pescaia
Without having any lunch, we drove back to our hotel and ate our leftover travel candy en cookies. The sky above the ocean was almost black by then. I quickly ran to the beach to photograph the upcoming thunderstorm. It was quite a threatening view. The air nearly exploded and there was a huge wind that blew away some outside furniture.

review RESTAURANT Il 13

Baby’s diaper
After the storm, we went to restaurant: “Il 13” for dinner (also lunch). After we entered the door, we waited for 5 minutes without any welcome. The small dining room inside was packed with people, but the (covered) garden area was nearly empty. At last, the personnel offered us a cold, windy table. We didn’t accept this and asked for a better place. The service was hurried and not very friendly. The food came pretty fast, but we had to wait for our plates for another 5 minutes. Our appetizers (meat, artichoke and anchovies) were ‘fresh’ out of a can. Horrible! On top of that, a poor mother had to change her baby’s diaper in the corner of the cold garden, on one of the dining tables, in front of dining people! Not a great view I can tell you. Our main dish, spaghetti with tomato sauce and spaghetti with seafood, were Italy unworthy! Not even fresh tomatoes, but probably sauce out of a can. The seafood tasted fresh, but I could almost count the pieces of seafood on one hand. The only thing we liked was the white house-wine. “Il 13” was a big failure. We rate this place with a 3 out of 10.
