Smelly hot spring (Tuscany 2012 #5)

Follonica sunset

Follonica sunset – Italy 2012

In the village of Saturnia, there is a free, natural hot spring. Although we were not sure we wanted to visit this place, we decided to check it out. We expected the worst: lots of people and ruined nature. After a drive through some beautiful nature, we arrived at the village. We saw some spa resorts along the way.
Hot Springs Satrunia

Rotten eggs
When you arrive at the village, the smell of rotten eggs (sulfur) is everywhere. Next to the main road, we saw some people walking around in bathing suits and bathing in a stream. The hot spring itself was not so bad as I expected. It was not very crowded, maybe because it was a Wednesday. We touched the hot water with our feet, but we decided this wasn’t the place where we wanted to spend our afternoon.
Review RESTAURANT BACCO E CERERE - Saturnia
Cutting some fresh herbs
Instead of joining the other (mostly elderly) people in the smelly water, we went for lunch in Saturnia. We found a good restaurant: Ristorante Bacco e Cerere. This restaurant serves food that is 70% organic coming from its own farm. Our meal couldn’t have a better start, when we saw the cook outside cutting some fresh herbs from the garden in front of the restaurant. Firstly, we received a free amuse of bread crumbs and vegetables. As a starter, we had mixed antipasti and melted local cheese with tomato saus, fresh herbs and bread. We had three kinds of warm bread, with different herbs and all freshly baked. As a main course, we had home-made spinach/cheese ravioli and tagliatelle with wild boar (typical for the region). We shared a nice dessert, mascarpone with fresh peach. We finished with an espresso (in Italian: caffe). In total, we paid 64,50 Euros. The service was also warm and friendly. We rate this place with an 8.5 out of 10.
Review RESTAURANT CICCIO BASTARDO - Follonica
Late night pizza snack
We spent the rest of the day driving around in the nice environment. After our great lunch, we decided have a pizza in the evening. On Tripadvisor, we found a pizza restaurant/snackbar in Follonica called: Ciccio Bastardo. Although this place did not look very inviting, we gave it a try. The pizzas were crispy and the place was packed with take-away customers, but the taste of the pizzas was a bit disappointing. The pizza prices are low, as everywhere in South Tuscany (Rating: 4.5 / 10).
