This night, we had a fan cooling our room a bit, and we slept much better than before. After breakfast, we drove to Carne Beach for a five-hour hike along the North-Sea. This beach is located near Veryan (Cornwall – TR2 5PF). We took walk No. 23 of the “50 Walks in Cornwall” AA-booklet (ISBN 978-0-7495-7398-0 / edition 2013). It’s a medium difficult walk with maximum ascent.
Carne Beach and Portloe
We arrived at a sunny beach after a 1,5 hour drive from Yelverton. There is a big parking lot that only costs 2 pounds. It’s not crowded at all. The first part of the trail leads to a small fishing village: called Portloe. The views on the North Sea are incredible. The water is crystal clear and of a beautiful blue colour. In The Netherlands, the North Sea is brown due to the sand and the heavy currents. Arriving at Portloe, we wanted some cold drinks and lunch. The sun was incredibly hot this day. We chose New Inn Pub for a cheese sandwich. Despite the attractive beer selection here, we decided to go for fizzy drinks. We agreed that walking in the hot sun and alcohol are not a good combination. The pub itself is fine, as is the service. Nothing special, but worth a 7 out of 10.
Ice cold sea
We went back through (farm) fields and Veryan village. It gave us a feeling of freedom to walk through the high grass and wild flowers. After four hours, we arrived back at Carne beach. We were faster than the minimum duration mentioned in the booklet, so we had some time left to take a dip into the blue sea. The water was freezing cold, but I still loved it.
Warne’s Bar & Restaurant in Wadebridge
It can be quite a search to find good restaurants that are open on Mondays. We found Warne’s Bar & Restaurant in Wadebridge. From the outside, it looked like a local grill restaurant and the menu didn’t look surprising at all. But we drove more than an hour to have dinner there, and decided to give it a try. We ordered calamaris as a starter and sea bass for the main course. Everything was very fresh and tasty. This restaurant is a hidden treasure, which makes you want to eat, eat and eat more. The service is very friendly. For desserts, we had fresh strawberries and sticky toffee pudding. Very yummie! The only thing we missed was a selection of local beers. We rate this restaurant with an 8.4 out of 10.
