We had to wake up at 03:30 to catch our flight to Madeira. When we arrived after a shaky landing, due to hard wind, we were pretty beat up. We checked in at our hotel: Hotel da Villa at Ponta do Sol, located in front of the ocean and a rocky beach. The views are fine, maybe a bit messy, but the sound of waves is really relaxing.
Lunch at hotel Estalagem
The owners of Hotel Villa also have another hotel on a steep cliff, just a few minutes by foot and an elevator. We could also use their facilities such as the swimming pool and spa. We decided to have some lunch here. My wife had an enormous sandwich and I had a skewer with fish. The food is a somewhat fatty. The ingredients appeared to be fresh. The taste is okay, but nothing special. The service is friendly but also a bit slow. I rate the restaurant of hotel Estalagem with a 6 out of 10.
Dinner at Restaurant Med
After lunch, we took a nap. For dinner, we made a reservation at restaurant Med in Funchal. It’s located in the huge hotel Porto Mare Hotel. We checked this restaurant via TripAdvisor. When the manager heard that we drove from Ponta do Sol just to eat there, he came and thanked us. He thought it was very special. It’s only a 25-minute drive. Unfortunately, the food was not as spectacular as the welcome and service. We had the bruschetta, calamare salad, fish and cabbage soup. As the main course, we had sea brass filet and a chicken dish.
We could not fit in a dessert anymore, but the restaurant manager insisted to let us taste some 10-year old Madeira wine, which tasted very good. It has some sort of dry port flavor. When he also gave a discount of 15%, we were totally surprised. The prices are not high at all. When it comes to ratings: the service is worth a 9, but the food is not impressive. So I rate this place with a 6.5 out of 10.
